Golden Torch, the oldest club at Berendo Middle School, was established in 1954 as a chapter of the National Junior Society. This organization was created to promote scholarship, citizenship, leadership, service and character.
Students with 3.5 and above grade point average and no “U”s on their final report cards are invited to join. Qualified students receive a membership card each semester. An installation ceremony is held each semester and all teachers and parents are welcome to attend. A luncheon is held each semester and all teachers and parents are welcome to attend. Golden Torch students also receive a gold-embossed certificate upon graduation and wear a special collar or cord during their graduation ceremony signifying membership in the National Junior Honor Society, if they qualified for two or more semesters in the 7th and 8th grade.
Golden Torch members are required to perform school and community service and also to assume leadership roles at school events.
Regular meeting during homeroom are held on Wednesdays. Attendance is mandatory.
